Most physical immigration documents are moving online and being replaced by eVisas in January 2025. The most commonly used physical documents are:
biometric residence permits (BRPs)
biometric residence cards (BRCs)
stamps in passports
Most BRP’s have an expiry date of 31st December 2024, but this doesn’t mean that the visa is ending on this date. The good news is that getting an eVisa is free and won’t change a status/current permission to work in the UK.
However, holders will need to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account before the end of 2024 to access the eVisa. If this applies to you, please note that all children and dependants will also need an account created.
Workers will be able to use their UKVI account to
· view and prove online status
· check what rights they have in the UK
· update personal details
What it means in the day to day checking of Right to Work
More good news – very little! The worker will generate a share code through their eVisa log in, and send that to the employer. The employer will then verify the RTW in the usual way.
For any workers needing assistance, here is a step by step guide:
1. Sign into your UK Visas and Immigration account
2. Using the "View and Prove" service to generate a share code
3. Share the share code with your employer or other relevant third party
The share code gives the recipient limited time access the relevant data, including eVisa and right to work status.
